Ammonia

An essential element for industry, agriculture, and environmental health

OQBI’s state-of-the-art, 365 ktpa nameplate capacity ammonia plant was commissioned in 2022, and designed to integrate a main feed of hydrogen-rich purge gas from the synthesis loop of our methanol plant. The ammonia plant has delivered strong utilisation, reaching 97% in H1 2024.
It has also ensured the evolution of OQBI into a leading regional ammonia producer and an essential contributor to the global supply.
Ammonia’s versatility is crucial for agriculture, environmental processes and the nitrogen cycle. With rising demand for fertilisers and clean fuels, its significance will grow as sustainability efforts and populations increase. The global demand for ammonia, particularly in fertilisers and clean fuel, is expected to rise as the world’s population grows and the drive towards sustainability accelerates. Ammonia is primarily produced from natural gas through several catalytic production steps.

Ammonia applications

Fertilisers

Ammonia is a crucial component in nitrogen-based fertilisers, essential for global agriculture to support the growing population.

Cleaning products

Its powerful cleaning properties make ammonia a common ingredient in household and industrial cleaning solutions.

Fermentation

Ammonia is used in the fermentation process for certain food and beverage production.

Refrigeration

It is used as a refrigerant in industrial refrigeration systems due to its excellent heat absorption properties.

Fuel

Ammonia is also being explored as a potential clean fuel alternative.

Methanol plant integration

OQBI’s ammonia plant is fully integrated with our methanol plant, offering several advantages

Increased methanol recovery

Installation of a methanol wash column to enhance methanol recovery.

National grid connection

Connecting our methanol plant to the national electrical grid, boosting overall availability.

Cost efficiency

Integration of the fire water network and control room reduces capital expenditure (Capex) for our ammonia project.

Shared utilities

Utilising integrated utilities such as nitrogen, instrument air, seawater supply and return, flare, desalinated water, DM water, chlorinated water and LP steam to lower operational expenditure (Opex) for both the ammonia and methanol plants.
