LPG

Commissioned in 2021, OQBI’s modern LPG products plant has a capacity of 356 ktpa and processes up to 8.8 MMSCMD of rich gas.
The plant includes gas processing facilities, storage tanks (23 Kt each for propane and butane, and 7.8 Kt for condensate), a loading site, and essential utilities such as instrument air, fire water systems, in-house power generation, hot oil units, and a flare system. The plant has registered strong operating performance, with utilisation reaching 98% in H1 2024.

Leading LPG Excellence

OQBI is a key player in Oman’s LPG industry, through the extraction and refinement of propane and butane from the country’s oil and gas resources.

As a cleaner, reliable energy source, LPG products enhance energy security and support global industries, creating jobs and reducing carbon footprints.

OQBI's LPG project encompasses several key components

Extraction and fractionation plant

Recovering LPG, 98.00% C3, 99.99% C4, and C5+ condensate from the total feed gas.

Refrigerated storage facility

Located near the Port of Salalah for propane and butane, with associated BOG units.

Ship export facility

Equipped with marine loading arms at the jetty inside the Port of Salalah.

Product pipelines

4.5 km pipelines from the extraction and fractionation facility to the storage facility, and 4 km pipelines from storage to the jetty.

Propane

Clean, consistent energy

Propane is a cleaner-burning, efficient energy source with fewer emissions, making it environmentally friendly for various industries and households. Its reliability in emergencies, like power outages, enhances its versatility. OQBI, a major propane producer, contributing significantly to the global supply.
Propane applications
  • Residential heating and cooking, providing a reliable and efficient energy source.
  • Industrial fuel for various applications.
  • Transportation fuel, serving as an alternative to traditional fuels.
  • Agricultural uses, such as crop drying, pest control, and machinery operation.
  • Leisure and recreation, including RVs, boats and camping stoves.
  • Power generation, offering a clean and efficient way to produce electricity.
Butane

Versatile, reliable power

Butane, a versatile and reliable liquefied petroleum gas (C₄H₁₀), is a vital product for various industries and households. As a key component of OQBI’s LPG products, this colourless, odourless gas is sourced from natural gas and crude oil refining, offering significant environmental benefits.

Butane applications
  • Fuel for portable stoves, lighters, torches, and camping equipment, offering clean and efficient burning.
  • Refinery feedstock for producing gasoline and other fuels.
  • Use in some refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Solvent in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food processing.
  • Aerosol propellant in products like hairsprays, deodorants and spray paints.
  • Extraction of essential oils in processes such as butane hash oil (BHO) extraction.
  • Lighter fuel for disposable lighters due to its clean-burning properties.
Condensate

Pure, efficient power

Condensate is a valuable, high-energy, low-carbon fuel with fewer emissions, making it an efficient and reliable energy source. As a major producer of condensate, OQBI significantly contributes to the global supply of this cleaner-burning resource.
Condensate applications
  • Refining to produce valuable products like gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and petrochemical feedstocks.
  • Diluent to reduce the viscosity of heavy crude oils for easier transportation.
  • Chemical feedstock for producing various chemicals and petrochemical products, including plastics, solvents, and lubricants.
  • Fuel for heating, power generation, and other industrial applications.
  • Blending with other fuels to improve properties or meet specific requirements.
  • Export to international markets as a feedstock for refineries or petrochemical plants.
